Demystifying Blood Work

Have you ever been to see your doctor because something didn’t feel “quite right”?

They order a bunch of blood work and a few days later your doctor calls and tells you “everything is normal, your blood looks great. It’s probably just this or that. I can write you a prescription for X but I’m sure you’ll feel better in a few days.”

You put the phone down feeling relieved, but moments later realize you still don’t feel “quite right” and quite frankly now you’re a bit frustrated because you weren’t taken very seriously and you have no further clarity on what the heck is going on!!

Has this ever happened to you? Yeah, me too. Sadly most of us just continue to ignore our symptoms and deal with it, writing it off as “nothing serious”. But symptoms are cues to actual things going on in our bodies and should never be ignored. It might be something so simple to fix but if left untreated could evolve into a massive problem.

I am a huge believer in the use of labs to help us figure out what is going on with our health and I don’t always want to have to go to my doctor to get them done. So I am thrilled to be an authorized affiliate for YourLabWork.com and to be able to share this amazing resource with you!

Once you order your labs, you have your blood drawn at any Quest Lab location in the United States (or any local draw station that works with Quest Labs) and your lab results are delivered right to your inbox.

Doctors are incredible. They've studied and worked so hard to get to where they are. They perform life-saving surgeries and genuinely want us all to be healthy. BUT... most are severely lacking in nutritional education. Most are also governed by health insurance parameters and following "within range" norms, which sadly results in more prescriptions being written than preventative measures being explored because, time is money.....  People generally want to do the right thing but often times their hands are tied, they're not appropriately educated, or they simply just don't know and they're doing things the way they've always been taught to do things.

I want that to change, and I believe the fastest way to bring about change is to lead by example. Show people a different way, change the conversation and shift the paradigm.

For years I struggled with various minor ailments. Nothing too crazy but over time they were becoming worse and worse. Every year I would have my blood work done and every year my doctor would tell me the same thing. "Besides your slightly elevated cholesterol, which we know is hereditary, everything looks great! You're in the normal range for everything. See you next year." Awesome news right? Well, yes and... no. Why didn't I feel great if everything looked great?

I started doing research and came up with a list of labs I wanted to get done within my annual blood work and my doctor told me "those are totally unnecessary, your ranges are completely normal, insurance doesn't cover any of those, it will cost you thousands, don't waste your money." 

Another thing you should know about me is that this type of answer generally sparks defiance and further fuels my desire!! Whilst some results from my previous blood work were "within range" they were lowish and when you combined that with another one which read a touch high, but still within the healthy range, it could be an early red flag for something more serious - so I delved a deeper, did tons of research, spoke to multiple health professionals and found a few very simple areas that needed a little extra help. Literally within days, I was feeling better, more me and oh so very much in control. This is one of the aspects that spurned further education and understanding of the nuances between "in range" and not quite my ideal range

I am, by no means, a doctor and I certainly do not intend to take the place of anyones doctor but as a health coach and wellness advocate I like to think of myself as part of your team. I am a huge believer in the use of labs to help us figure out what is going on with our health and stay ahead of the curve.

YourLabWork.com was created by Dr. Alan Hopkins, an ER doctor who saw increasing numbers of patients coming into his ER with cancer, heart attacks, strokes and complications from diabetes … most of which are preventable through food and lifestyle choices … AND at younger and younger ages. He started YourLabWork because he believes so strongly in the need for access to thorough and complete labs as part of our proactive and preventative health care, so that we can spot and work to resolve problems BEFORE we become symptomatic.

One Time Labs Review

A 75 minute consultation to help you review your lab results, share some great resources to help you understand your results; discuss food, lifestyle and supplement changes you may want to consider and flag any potential concerns you may want to investigate further or discuss with your doctor. 

I cannot receive lab results from your doctor, a lab (including YourLabWork.com) or anyone except YOU! You must send any labs to be reviewed to me at least 48 hours in advance of our schedule consultation, to allow me sufficient time to review them. 

Our consultation will be held online via Zoom (a very easy to use video conferencing site). Prior to our consultation time, I will send you a Zoom link with clear instructions on how to log onto zoom, if you are new to this technology.

Labs Consultation & Review Package

If you prefer to have help navigating the process of deciding which labs you need and ordering them, I also offer a slightly more extensive lab package which includes two separate consultations. You fill out an Intake Form in advance of our first consult, to help me get to know you and your health concerns and goals. Then we have a 50 minute consultation to discuss your needs and the labs which you may want to consider to help further your goals.

Following our consultation, you order the labs you choose through YourLabWork.com. Upon receipt of your lab results (sent to you via email–usually within a week of your draw), you send them on to me. When I receive your results, I’ll send you a link to schedule our second 75 minute consultation. This consultation is to help you review and understand your lab results; discuss food, lifestyle or supplement changes you may want to consider and to flag any potential concerns you may want to investigate further or discuss with your doctor. Labs to be reviewed must be sent to me at least 48 hours in advance of our scheduled consultation, to allow me sufficient time to review them. 

Our consultations will be held online via Zoom (a very easy to use video conferencing site). Prior to our appointment time, I will send you a Zoom link with clear instructions on how to log onto zoom, if you are new to this technology.
